LEARN MORE ABOUT EDGE MMA

The Biggest, Hottest Wave Called EDGE MMA

Just Hit Scottsdale!

Last year one MMA (Mixed Martial Arts) Pay Per View (PPV) had over 1 million buys, far more than for comparable boxing shows.  In October, the UFC Tito Ortiz vs. Ken Shamrock card pulled in 4.2 million viewers.  This is the hottest thing going.

In the male market between ages 18 - 34, UFC's Tito vs. Shamrock outdrew its sporting competition in that time slot. What event did MMA out draw? It was none other than the opening game of Major League Baseball's American League Playoff Series. MMA drew 10% more viewers. That is unprecedented. Considering the first UFC in 1993 pulled in 80,000 PPV buys, which was impressive at the time, MMA is now off the charts.

The difference between what this new market wants and what is out there is like comparing the boy and girl scouts to golden gloves boxing.-John Graden

EDGE MMA is the answer.

EDGE MMA is a fusion of the very best stand up skills from Muay Thai Kickboxing, Boxing, and ground fighting and grappling skills from Brazilian JiuJitsu (BJJ), Shootfighting, Submission Wrestling and more.

EDGE MMA MIXED MARTIAL ARTS BEGINS!

Learn MMA Without glorifying unnecessary violence, training with smelly tattooed street thugs or in a dingy dungeon.

The increasing media coverage of the sport since the first UFC in 1993 has created a massive group seeking to learn how to fight like their heroes on TV. They are not looking for traditional martial arts or Tae Bo.

Make no mistake.  The EDGE MMA class is not like many so called "martial arts schools" programs that are little more than motivational day care centers governed by the concerns of mothers more than the needs of the student or a McDojo program that turns out Paper Tigers.  This is true Mixed Martial Arts designed by Champions, world class MMA athletes and trainers.  I don't mean watered down Taekwondo with some kind of grappling layered in. I mean a stand alone, safe, professional curriculum from top-to-bottom (EDGE MMA is exactly that).

"I personally designed this program because not everyone who wants to learn MMA is a tattooed angry street fighter. In fact, most of those guys don't last in traditional programs because they don't like to follow instructions and ritual.

Finally...

Intelligent non-violent people, and beginners can

learn MMA without getting black eye!

I'll tell you who is loving our EDGE MAA training–professionals like financial advisors, attorneys, business owners and executives. They are fascinated by what I did with this program. They are hooked by our unique more friendly and professional approach and can't get enough." -John Nottingham

Develop explosive speed, strength and flexibility while having the time of your life!

Here is how John Nottingham's EDGE MMA is different:

1. The ego is checked at the door

2. No military type instructions and rituals

3. Clean, professional environment with the best gear and mats money can buy

4. A qualified instructor who keeps his focus on you, not his own workout

5. No long term binding contract required

6. No training with kids

7. Seminars and special training with legends and champions

8. Strategy, mechanics and technique is emphasized over brawn

9. Safety is our number one concern

10. Designed specifically for beginners

Handbags, Heels and ChocolatE

Now that we have your attention we want to invite you to attend a special event where no men are allowed!

Please join us on Saturday, May 5, 2007 for our Women’s Only Self Defense Seminar with special guest instructor, Martial Arts Master Teresa Lechtenberg, from Mile High Karate in Sandy, Utah.  We are excited to have her return to our schools – the ladies are STILL talking about her seminar at Camp Kick and the mean pressure point knockouts she taught!  They are also still talking about how effective they were!  This time we have even more in store for you!  You will receive a free gift at registration – as Master Teresa Lechtenberg says, “ just a little something for a female to carry in her purse or on her keychain”.  Master Lechtenberg will teach you how to use this “little something” as an effective means of self defense.

We look forward to seeing you there.  Bring a friend – no martial arts experience is necessary.    We are not going to learn how to beat up people (well, maybe just a few little “somethings”) and we are not going to do the latest Jet Li move.  But we are going to learn steps to be responsible for our own personal safety.  It will make a great “Girl’s Morning Out”!!  And, of course, true to the title – there will be chocolate.

Black Belt Spectacular Creates Lasting Memories

Grand Master Richard Na Sword Form USA Martial Arts Black Belt Spectacular October 2006

"I love the egarness of your students.

You have a great family."

                                       -Grandmaster Richard Na

The USA Martial Arts Class 68 Black Belt Spectacular was filled with memorable moments.  It left no doubt of the confidence building attributes of the USA Martial Arts program.  From touching gestures to amazing feats, it was an event to enjoy for the whole family.   Held at Hamilton High School in Chandler on Saturday, October 28, 2006, the formal event highlighted the public portion of the Black Belt candidates test and promotion.   It also serves as a fund raiser with part of the proceeds going to the local chapter of the Break the Chain Foundation.

Featured guests included Grandmaster Richard Na from Washington, Master Brett Lechtenberg of Utah, Mr. Nelson Ewing and Mr. G. Larson of Arizona and Mrs. Laura Oliveria of Maryland.

Lead by Airman and UMA Student Michael Brown, members of the US Air Force were present to honor the flag as the color guard.  The National Anthem was beautifully sung by Mrs. Kiki Pfeifer and daughter, Amanda Pfeiffer.  The school spirit competition, based on participation, ticket sales and performance went to the reigning champs at the Mesa Academy.  They were led by Instructor Apprentice Mr. John Martin.

Graduates included students from around the valley including Mesa, Glendale, Fountain Hills, Gilbert and Peoria.   Graduates of class 68 are as follows:

3rd Dan:  Mr. Anthony Miles

2nd Dan:  Mrs. Karen Tucker, Mr. John Martin, Ms. Teresa Jenkins, Mr. James Forward

2nd Poom (Jr. Black Belt): Amanda P.

1st Dan:  Mrs. Barbara Stancill

1st Poom:  Malinda S., Kyle S., Tyler S., Connor V.

Conditional Black:  Mr. Eric Ballard, Mrs. Aurora Ballard, Mr. Steve Ramirez, Mrs. JoAnne Ramirez, Mrs. Lori Bruns, Sarah B., Taylor W. and John C..

The Black Belt Demonstrations began as the USA Martial Arts First Degree Group, donned with red and blue headbands, involved the audience with a performance of Black Belt skill.

Other performances included a Fan and Kama demo by Tia H., Cody H., Amanda P., and Jacen M. and then Mr. Shawn O’Neill and Steve R. Jr. engaged the audience with a display of Hollywood razzle dazzle.

Next, students who went on the recent UMA China Tour demonstrated a Chinese Wushu Kung Fu form learned at Shaolin Nanbei Martial Art Institute in Dengfeng.  They performed in the full Chinese style uniforms they received as a gift from Master Nottingham while in China. Ms. Roth once again thrilled the audience with a clever and most humorous demo with Mr. Don Hedges.  Next up was a strong display of hard work from Jr. Black Belt Shane Condon with a Chinese style broadsword form.

Mr. Anthony Miles was setting a standard as he tested and successfully was promoted to the coveted 3rd Degree Black Belt.  Impressed with his performance Grandmaster Na said to Mr. Miles, “I really look forward to your Master level test in the future.”  He continued, "...one of the best 3rd Degree Tests I've ever seen."

Mr. Miles thrilled the crowd with a display of self defense skills against multiple armed attackers culminating with a humorous gun disarm that left the audience chuckling.  His big finish was a series of power breaks including an explosive 5 brick speed break with a spinning back kick and jump round kick that smashed a pumpkin carved into a jack-o-lantern.   This is one feature that you will want to watch over and over and will make the DVD purchase worth the price alone and probably make it one of the classic best sellers.

A newly edited Break the Chain Foundation Break-a-thon video was shown featuring many UMA students.  Master Lechtenberg thanked the audience and UMA supporters for their efforts at this year’s breakathon.  He then announced plans for the first ever real time international brick break in 2007.  Master Lechtenberg then made a special presentation on behalf of the Break the Chain Foundation to top fund raisers and contributors.  Recipients included Mr. Anthony Miles for donating, shooting, directing and producing a beautiful video for international release and the Wolpe Family for being top fund raisers at this year’s breakathon charity event.

For the grand finale’, Grandmaster Richard Na took the stage for a much anticipated demonstration.  He began with a few warm up stretches and exploded into a powerful empty handed form.  Seamlessly, he segued into a mesmerizing single sword routine and  then transitioned into wielding two swords.  His performance was met with a standing ovation and enthusiastic cheers.  Master Na then presented Master Nottingham the gift of one of his twin swords to hang in the new Scottsdale school in honor of Master Nottingham’s commitment to martial arts and to his students.  The event was certainly a night to remember.

Plans are in the works for Grandmaster Na and Master Lechtenberg to return for the Grand Opening Gala of the new Scottsdale school in late January with the Korean Eagle Demo Team.

Master Nottingham later presented a check to the local chapter of the Break the Chain Foundation Children’s Charity from a portion of the proceeds of the Black Belt Spectacular ticket and ad sales.

If you missed it or would like a keepsake for your personal library of all the exciting action and touching moments, a limited supply of professionally produced DVDs are available for purchase by contacting Ms. Rhonda Roth at 480-807-0657 or info@usa-martialarts.com.

USA Martial Arts Schools of Arizona joined together on September 9th at the Albertson's center at 59th Ave. & 101 in Glendale, Arizona to break boards and bricks for charity.  All proceeds will be donated to Childhelp USA, based in Scottsdale, Arizona.  The mission is to help "Break the Chain of Child Abuse" and have the party of the year.

The event coordinator for the event was Mrs. Lori Bruns who is a USA Martial Arts student and 6th Grade teacher at Sierra Verde Elementary School.

Businesses and families could donate a brick for $100 and have it broken at the event. Over 70 bricks and over 300 boards were broken.  Collectively the event raised over $7,000 and funds are still coming in.

The Grande Finale

A 25 Brick FIRE BREAK

Two stacks of five bricks prepared for Master Nottingham’s simultaneous double downward elbow strikes for the firebreak.

Concealed amidst intense heat and flames, 6th Degree Master John Nottingham prepares for his 25 brick fire break that has him simultaneously breaking two stacks of 5 bricks with his elbows before stepping forward and attacking a stack of 15.

A last second change of wind increased the danger of the break.  He made it through the first 10 with a simultaneous double elbow strike to 5 bricks on the right and 5 on the left.  Forced to wait for a wind change, the intensity of the heat grew but Nottingham didn’t give up.  He attempted 15 and amidst the fire broke 10 on the first strike and had to make a successful second attempt for the remaining 5.

Fresh out of conducting a charity break-a-thon, Master Nottingham recently went on a whirlwind tour of Sandy , Utah and Seattle , Washington to conduct and participate in both testing and training events.  From drumming up support for the Break the Chain of Child Abuse Foundation to public speaking engagements, teaching seminars and testing, there was little time for rest.

After conducting two seminars in Utah featuring XMA (Xtreme Martial Arts) and Jeet Kune Do, Master Nottingham traveled with his associate Master Brett Lechtenberg to Master Na’s Black Belt Academy in Seattle.

Founder of the International Taekwondo Masters Association, or ITMA, Grandmaster Richard Na, WTF 8th Degree Black Belt, is considered one of the foremost Masters in the world and has earned the distinction of Mastering the Korean Martial Arts of Taekwondo and Hapkido.  Known for giving up a career as a professional counselor, a field in which he earned a degree, Grandmaster Na chose to devote his life to his students as a Martial Arts Master.  Some may recognize him from his featured appearance on the cover of Taekwondo Times magazine or his amazing break on Karatebody.net for Break the Chain of Child Abuse.

There for two days of Black Belt Testing, training and events, Master

Nottingham conducted and participated in a series of seminars with other Masters from around the country.  Grandmaster Na and many other notable Masters were present for the event.  Included in that distinguished list were Master Lim, a former member of the Korean Tiger Demonstration Team, and ITMA veterans Master Bruce Arneklev, Master Hazli Katsikapes and Master Brett Lechtenberg.

Grandmaster Na on the cover of Taekwondo Times Magazine

Unbeknownst to Master Nottingham, prior to the Black Belt Test event a closed door meeting was held by Grandmaster Na and the Masters present to determine if Master Nottingham possessed the traits and experience to be an ITMA Master.  Included in the discussion, pictures of  his recent 25 brick fire break for children’s charities were passed around.  In that meeting each Master signed an engraved plate and certificate officially making Master Nottingham part of the distinguished ITMA Martial Arts family lineage. This is the first time in history that they have elected to recognize anyone outside their direct martial arts family lineage as high as a 6th Dan.

Later that evening at the Black Belt Test, in an unprecedented gesture, Grandmaster Na described to the audience of over 100 the character traits he seeks in a Master Instructor and explained accepting Master Nottingham as a student.  Although already recognized as a 6th Degree Black Belt, Grandmaster Na then awarded Master Nottingham with his official ITMA 6th Degree Certificate complete with signatures of the original ITMA Masters.

Visibly moved by the gesture, Master Nottingham performed a formal kneeling bow to Grandmaster Na, then stood to bow to the Master Panel, the graduating Black Belt class and the audience as a sign of humility and deep respect.  “It was a really special moment in my life and I am grateful for every second of it.  It means more to me that I did not ask for it and my friend Master Lechtenberg went out of his way to nominate me and each Master vote me in.”

The event was followed with the time honored tradition of going to dinner together in celebration.  On behalf of the ITMA, Master Lechtenberg then presented Master Nottingham with the signed and engraved plate signed by the original ITMA Masters.  Master Nottingham will continue training with Grandmaster Na and the ITMA organization to keep his skills sharp and offer his students his very best.

Secrets of China and The Shaolin Temple Documentary Series Update

The latest reports from project coordinator, Li Jian Guo, (aka “Robinson”) are that the documentary series is currently in voice-over narration post production.  He anticipates the work being done as soon as the production company can schedule the time with the voice over talent (James Smith) for recording.

Edits will also be made to enhance the professionalism and music score for the production.  The artwork for the DVD covers is nearly complete with only a few minor changes to be made.  It is looking great!  The movie style poster is also in the works and should be completed in the same time frame as the voice over project.

Once complete, the final approval edit will be made by Master Nottingham and the documentary series goes to duplication, it will be shipped to the USA and distributed to those who purchased it.  We are looking forward to an amazing finished product.

If you would like to reserve and order your copy of this amazing historic package, contact Rhonda Roth today at 480-807-0657 or email info@usa-martialarts.com.

Terracotta Warrior Arrives and Finds New Home In Arizona

Replica Artifact from 8th Wonder of The World Added to Collection

The crate arrived in Mesa , weathered from it long overseas trip, from Xian, China – home of the Terracotta Warrior Museum .  Too large to fit through the door of the school, Black Belts and student volunteers were quick to offer help in unpacking and moving the 570lb crate containing the life-size replica Terracotta Warrior and the three small Warrior statues that were included as gifts.  Now proudly displayed at the Mesa USA Martial Arts location, plans are in the works to create a more elaborate display for our Terracotta Warrior with multi-media information and education.

The ultimate goal is to create a museum of artifacts and information with tours open to the public, especially school-aged children, offering experiential education about world history, Asia and the role of the warriors.  Black Belts from USA Martial Arts will have the opportunity to earn a special designation and serve in the museum as volunteers.  They will be trained and tested on history, culture, language, communication, and martial arts in order to have the opportunity to be an official museum guide.  These guides will educate the visitors and entertain them with stories, interactive learning and valuable life lessons about history that make education come alive.  In addition, kids will have the opportunity to watch a demonstration, take a free lesson in historical Wushu, and practice some self-defense as they learn an escape move from a would-be abductor.  All of this will be offered free, or for a very small fee to the community as a service from generous donors to the museum.

Break The Chain Foundation Charity In Action

Founded by Martial Arts Masters, BTC Foundation is an organization dedicated to the treatment and prevention of child abuse.  Created by Master Brett Lechtenberg , the foundation works to raise funds through break-a-thons and other charity events.  His goal is to inspire other martial arts schools and students, corporations and people everywhere to break the chain of child abuse.

Master John Nottingham and Brett Lechtenberg recently spoke to the Exchange Club to drum up support for the growing foundation.  “The momentum is building and we’re excited to see the support from many companies.” said Master Lechtenberg.  Following the presentation they received several requests for meetings and gained support from Albertsons and others.  “Master Lechtenberg really speaks from the heart.  I was so inspired by his sincere words I felt like I wanted to stand up and cheer.  I know I feel the same way he does about this issue and that’s why the foundation is going to make such a difference.” said Nottingham .

Schools from around the country including Washington , Utah , Arizona , and Florida are already on board.  Plans are in the works for a global, real time event that will span from the US to Asia next year to break a World Record.

Master Nottingham Appointed to Board of Directors of Break The Chain Foundation

“I am proud to be a member of this distinguished organization.  Its mission is important, timely and inspiring.  Due to the generosity, discipline and good stewardship of the board, we are dedicated to making sure that the money gets to the kids, not burned up in bureaucracy.  Each of us takes our role seriously that it is for and about the kids.  With that kind of integrity and servant hearts in leadership, I know it will be blessed and grow.” said Nottingham .

Korean Eagle Taekwondo Demonstration Team To Perform at USA Martial Arts

The Korean Eagles will land in Arizona as part of their US Tour.  As the selected official sister school of the team and their district in Korea , USA Martial Arts will have the opportunity to see the team perform.  Plans are to have them do a show for the official Grand Opening of the new Scottsdale Academy .  Selected Mastery Leadership Black Belt Team students may have the chance to host and have the team stay at their homes as part of a cultural exchange.

JohnNottingham.com and MasterNottingham.com Under Redevelopment

Master Nottingham’s personal website is currently under contract for redevelopment.  The new site is projected to launch within the next 30-90 days.  Included in the site will be various programs and services offered, media and eventually downloads that are instantly accessible.

The Shaolin Kung fu adventure

Shaolin Kung Fu Adventure Features

Guest Masters and Unforgettable Events

For the first time ever on August 25-26th, USA Martial Arts hosted an overnight training event unlike any other -- the Shaolin Kung Fu Adventure!  The event featured Chinese Broadsword Instruction with a special guest, Master Kenny Perez, who was the stunt double for JET LI!

Extensive Preparations

The school underwent construction and spared little expense to convert it into a replica of the famed Shaolin Temple!  The themed mural was painted by Black Belt Mrs. Karen Tucker, a professional artist, with assistance from Instructor Rhonda and Black Belt Sarah Roth.   But that wasn’t all, the mats were pulled up to reveal the wooden floating floor, special decorations were added from dragon kites, Chinese lamps and more.

Special Equipment and Weapons

Everyone received an official black Kung Fu uniform complete with white trim and traditional frog buttons, a custom UMA Shaolin Temple red shirt, and kung fu shoes.   Each were given a competition style Chinese Broadsword with scabbard and colorful flags on handle.

Mixer and Chop Socky Movie Marathon

The event kicked off with a mixer so that everyone could get to know one another.  The movie marathon featured the latest Black Belt Spectacular, plus the classics Kung Fu Hustle and Iron Monkey.  Chips, watermelon and mandarin oranges were served while they enjoyed the entertainment and made their own custom warrior headbands.  Black Belt Mrs. Kelli Wolpe treated everyone to pizza!

Teams were chosen and the high energy challenges began.  Lead by Mr. Austin Cho, 2nd Dan, the Kung Pao Kickers faced the highly motivated Wushu U, lead by Instructor in training, Mr. Ron Stancill.  From the 1000 kick and 500 push up team challenges to the balance tests, the action was nearly non-stop.

Master Perez Shaolin Broadsword Instruction

Master Kenny Perez started with an empty hand Wushu form and followed with a magnificent traditional Shaolin Wushu Broadsword form with explosive, fluid movements and captivating twirling.  Along with the movements, the participants learned the types of attacks, parries, blocks and application with some traditional lore.  A hand picked crew will be performing this exotic Broadsword form at the next Black Belt spectacular in full Kung Fu regalia.  Some of the mostdedicated are practicing daily.

Special Bonus Surprise-Beijing Wushu Team Master Demo

To the group’s astonishment, they were treated to another guest Master from the world class Beijing Wushu Team.  Master Shao Chang Jun performed demonstrations of both empty hand and Broadsword forms. He also performed a jaw-dropping 1080 degree kick (3 complete revolutions in the air)!  Many participants had him autograph their sword scabbards and got pictures.

Instructor Don Gray Hosts Modern Army Combatives Seminar

Instructor Don GraySecond Degree Black Belt and Instructor Don Gray conducted a seminar on Modern Army Combatives.  For a mere $25, attendees were able to experience the current tactics taught in the US Army from an active duty soldier and Black Belt Instructor.

Mr. Gray is an Airborne soldier, formerly assigned to the historic 82nd Airborne as part of the engineers.  He was also undefeated in his Army Combatives training matches.

The Modern Army Combatives system is a fusion of Brazilian (Gracie) Jiu-jitsu, Filipino Martial Arts and Boxing developed by RANGER NCO Matt Larson.  It uses full resistance training drills with the goal to build morale and confidence.

The event was followed by some quality time and pot luck for students with Mr. Gray before he deploys to Iraq.  Mr. Gray surprised participants with MRE’s (meals-ready-to-eat), the food kits currently used by US soldiers around the world.  He even taught some of the kids how to make a vanilla milk shake!

And to my mentor and friend, Ms. Templeman, I thank you for the time you spent with me and for coming to Camp Kick to share your love for the martial arts with us! And last but not least; Mr. Gray for encouraging me to have the belief in myself to break my board and my very limiting thought! I am tired and very sore and stiff, but have not had such fun discovering myself in a long time! Alexa has gained so much confidence this weekend...what a joy to what! Thank you all again!"   - Ms. Hamlett (now a purple belt!)

A special thanks to SBN, Ms Roth, and the Lechtenberg Masters. Once again we have grown thanks to all of you…
The best part of Camp Kick was the opportunity to meet the great Pil Sung students who drove all the way from Utah and Ryan and his family who came all the way from Tucson. !!!!YOU ROCK!!!!!
If you haven't been to a Camp Kick you really, really, really, gotta go next year."    - Rose Deguisne

"…I have so many wonderful memories. This weekend was even better than previous Camps. Thank you SBN and Ms. Roth for the thoughtful planning and hard work. It was great to have the Lechtenberg family involved, to meet new brothers and sisters from Sandy UT, and Tucson, to attend special seminars, to see some of our own graduate to new belts and to see the leadership potential in some of our younger students. We also had the privilege of seeing Mr. Gray and Ms. Templeman and family....there was so much. I also enjoyed getting to know many of my own fellow students better. I recommend the weekend for everyone, and hope to see more new faces next year!"   - Karen Tucker

This year was definately a BLAST… Not to mention 3 Masters in the house! Ladies, if you ever have the chance to work with MRS. Master Lechtenberg - don't miss out!!...
The Pil Seung students were incredible! They really know how to "Bring it on"! I hope we see more of them - and making that drive all the way down from Utah - that's Black belt spirit!! Ms. Wise is absolutely incredible with the BO Staff."     - Michelle Martin

"Camp Kick was amazing!!! I can barely move today - it's wonderful. I had so much fun, and it was great training alongside Master Lechtenberg's students. Mrs. Master Lechtenberg's seminar was awesome - thank you ma'am! It was great to have Ms. Templeman there - your one handed kama form looked great! And, of course, the best surprise was turning around and coming face to face with Mr. Gray - it's awesome to have you back sir, even if for a little while.

Thank you SBN and Ms. Roth for another great camp. I can't wait until the next one!"    - Tess Jenkins

"This was my first camp kick---
I have to admit that yesterday evening I was questioning my own sanity in spending two full days training, playing games, and creating mischief... but as I was examining some of my well-earned bruises this morning (from stunt fighting scenes, new bo staff tricks, and rolls and falls) I noticed some bulges I had never seen before - WOW! - I have new muscles popping out all over.
How is that these muscles appeared literally overnight?? My conclusion: They must be perserverence muscles!
I'll definitely be at the next camp!!! With bells on!
Thanks everyone!"    - Angela Lian

"A huge standing ovation and thank you to all the individuals who helped put on an amazing camp. This was Connor's and my first Camp Kick (even though we've been around longer than most) and it was worth every muscle ache and bruise I have. My head is still spinning from all the new knowledge gained, but the Accelerated Training (squished between all the other fun stuff) was actually one of the best parts for me. Thank you to all the staff - Mr. O'Neill, Ms. Roth, Mr. Martin for taking any spare moments to offer their expertise and training even when it was during breaks, outside on the concrete, in the hall, wherever there was a teaching moment. Though it was extremely nerve racking to perform in front of a large group, I appreciate the feeling this school generates that is so supportive of everyone. As always, kudos to Master Nottingham along with Ms. Roth for all their careful planning to make it seem the event came off with ease, and to both Master Lechtenbergs for taking time from their school, a
